Revitalizing the Downtown area
Our town is historical, and there are two active historical societies whose focus is preservation and education. In order to preserve Stone Mountain, we need to take opportunities to renovate the retail/office spaces we already have available, instead of bringing in new construction. There is a lack of retail to serve the local community. We need to work with local small businesses to make it easier for them to stay open and succeed. We need a pedestrian friendly downtown with a variety of stores that are useful for our residents. There is a lack of consistent business hours and off the main strip there is a lack of uniformity causing the historic character to be compromised. We need to develop and implement a plan to utilize our open spaces for the enjoyment of everyone in our city. The four municipal parks, Mason, Medlock, McCurdy and VFW, need repair so our children can play safely. There are multiple facilities available that can be utilized for events and ceremonies, i.e. the Rock Gym and the old City Hall. Money that is obtained from the leasing of these spaces can be set aside for further improvements. There is the potential for development of additional parks, recreational facilities and community gatherings with consideration to include the historic character surrounding the area. We have started activities like the Bike Run and the 5K Color Run, but in order to continue growing, a citywide event should be held monthly. Some of the larger multi-family rental properties in the city have the potential to convert to condominiums to promote home ownership and community investment of residents. The planning of these types of events and the development of new, useful businesses will help revitalize Stone Mountain.
