Biography
Andrea Redmond represents the Post 6, encompassing the City of Stone Mountain. Elected to the City Council in 2013, Andrea’s vote total in the general election was the highest of any candidate running for City Council throughout Stone Mountain. She is recognized as a strong advocate for public schools, affordable business development, gender equality and economic empowerment.
Andrea grew up in Stone Mountain and raised her three children here. The small town feel, friendly neighbors, excellent schools, Stone Mountain Park, and the Village keep this city special. She is the third generation of her family to reside in Stone Mountain. Her grandparents, Boyd and Gertrude Davis, built their home on E. Mountain street in the 1930's. Her parents, Bob and Margaret Redmond, built their home on Ridge Avenue in the 1940's.
Andrea previously served as an educator for 30 years with the DeKalb and Gwinnett School systems. In 2001, she was assigned the responsibility of Media Design Specialist at Meadowcreek Elementary. During this time, she developed a state of the art media center and video production lab; using data she built a collection of materials to challenge the diverse and multi-language school population. The development of news broadcast and computer literacy, along with parent advocacy and official educational administrative input, her program resulted in the creation of a model for other new schools.
As a member of the UGA and Gwinnett County Educational Leadership Cohort, Andrea prepared to develop the Science Specialist program at the new Ferguson Elementary School. The coordination of Academic Knowledge Skills for all grade levels with the extensive curriculum development of all students increased test scores for the entire school.
Andrea has served on the Board of Title I Schools in Lilburn and Duluth, Georgia; and on the Media Development Project – an organization that advocates having teachers, parents and administrators directly decide how to spend appropriated budget. She has also been a member of Parent Centers, an organization that arranges for ESL classes, job training, computer training and career counseling (provided free of charge) in local elementary schools for parents of school-age children.
Andrea received a B.S. and a Masters in Media Technology from Georgia State University. She also received a Masters in Educational Leadership from the University of Georgia. She lives in a historical home on the west side of Stone Mountain.
